Ethereum is a decentralized open source blockchain system with its own native cryptocurrency, Ether. Ethereum is also the platform on which many other cryptocurrencies operate, and it can also execute decentralized smart contracts. Vitalik Buterin published a white paper in 2013 that first introduced the concept of Ethereum. Vitalik, along with other co-founders, secured funding for the project through online crowdfunding in the summer of 2014 and officially launched the Ethereum blockchain on July 30, 2015. Ethereum claims its aim is to become a global, decentralized application platform that allows users around the world to write and run software free from censorship, downtime, and fraud.
